Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# South Africa demands International Court of Justice should order Israel out of Rafah
# The Western Cape premier assures the investigations into the George building collapse will be thorough
# And, rugby: The Stormers bank a bonus point URC win over Dragons
# South Africa has filed a new application with the International Court of Justice for an order for Israel to halt its offensive in Rafah in Gaza. It says the ICJ’s current emergency measures are no longer sufficient as the assault on Rafah “is not only an escalation”, but poses an extreme risk to the delivery of supplies and services, “and to the very survival of Palestinians as a group”. According to South Africa, there is “evidence of evacuation zones being treated as extermination zones”, and that Israel is drawing up “kill lists”.
# Western Cape premier Alan Winde has assured the public investigations into the multi-storey building collapse in George will be thorough. He praised the efforts of emergency teams and volunteers, noting the complexity of the operation. Nearly 700 personnel are involved in the search and rescue efforts, using heavy machinery to remove rubble carefully. Winde says the operation will continue until all individuals are accounted for, with victims and their families remaining the top priority:
In the Eastern Cape, five people have been confirmed dead after a shop wall collapsed in Ngcobo, Eastern Cape. Thirteen people have been rushed to the All Saints Hospital with various injuries. The Eastern Cape Health Department says emergency services and rescue teams continue search and rescue operations. The department extends heartfelt condolences to the affected families.
# The Johannesburg High Court has postponed the corruption case against former Transnet executives Brian Molefe, Anoj Singh and others to 11 October, 2024. They also face charges of contravening the Public Finance Management Act and fraud relating to a locomotive tender. The National Prosecuting Authority’s Henry Mamothame says the state objected to a former NPA head representing one defendant. He says the aim is to hold those responsible accountable:
# And, rugby: Angelo Davids and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu scored two tries each to help the Stormers to a United Rugby Championship bonus-point win against Welsh side Dragons in Newport last night. The 44-21 victory means the Stormers retain fifth place on the log. There is now a one-point gap between the Cape side and the fourth-placed Bulls, who face league leaders Glasgow Warriors in Pretoria this afternoon. After that match, the Sharks welcome Benetton to Durban. And this evening it’s the Lions against Cardiff at Ellis Park.
