Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with soccer: South Africa dominated the inaugural COSAFA awards held in Johannesburg. Men’s Coach of the Year went to Mamelodi Sundowns’, Rulani Mokwena, while Banyana Banyana’s, Desiree Ellis, won the Women’s Coach of the Year. Sundowns’ players Ronwen Williams, Thapelo Maseko, and Andile Dlamini, won Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year, Men’s Most Promising Player, and Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year respectively. Al Ahly star Percy Tau won Men’s Player of the Year. Mokwena says this award is special:
# Cricket: This year’s SA 20 drew over 20-percent more television viewers than last year’s inaugural season. Ten of the 34 matches were sold out, including the final at Newlands in Cape Town where Sunrisers Eastern Cape retained their title by beating Durban’s Super Giants. Over 70-percent of available tickets were sold, while 96-percent of spectators described the stadium experience as very enjoyable. The league’s commissioner, Graeme Smith, credited fans, partners, players and stakeholders for the successful season.
More cricket news: Virat Kohli remains the top-scorer in this year’s Indian Premier League, with 634 runs in 12 games at an incredible average of 70 runs. This follows after he slammed 92 to set up a 60-run win for Royal Challengers Bengaluru over Punjab Kings to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. The team ended on 241 for seven and then bowled Punjab out for 181. The 35-year-old Kohli was happy to contribute to the victory:
# Rugby: The Rugby Football Union has issued England and Saracens star, Billy Vunipola, with a formal warning following his arrest in Majorca, Spain, last month. The 31-year-old issued a public apology after being fined for refusing to leave a bar in the island’s capital, Palma. The warning will sit on Vunipola’s disciplinary record for five years. The union says it has been made clear to the England number eight that as a senior and respected player, such actions risk bringing the game into disrepute.
# And finally, roadrunning: Some of Africa’s elite athletes are preparing to take part in the ninth edition of the Run Your City Cape Town race on Sunday. South Africa’s ten-kilometre record holder, Precious Mashele, the country’s three-time Olympian Stephen Mokoka, and Lesotho Olympian Neheng Khatala, are among the 12-thousand runners who will take on the ten-kilometre route from Milnerton to the CBD. The city says the race has become one of the country’s most loved roadrunning events.
