# President Cyril Ramaphosa says the 30 Year Review Report serves as a vital reference for understanding the past and shaping the future. Addressing a delegation during the launch of the report in Pretoria, Ramaphosa said the country is confronted with slow economic growth, high unemployment, poverty, inequality, and underdevelopment. Ramaphosa emphasised that efforts continue to address challenges, including the energy crisis and structural reforms for economic growth:
# Metalworkers’ union Numsa has welcomed a ruling by the Labour Court preventing SA Steel Mills from unlawfully disciplining and dismissing workers. The union had taken the company to court after it suspended 162 workers for allegedly participating in an unprotected strike. They argue the employer’s actions are premature pending a final court ruling on the strike’s legality. Numsa’s Phakamile Hlubi-Majola vows ongoing support for their members, ensuring fair treatment throughout legal proceedings:
# A senior Athletics South Africa executive, Terrence Magogodela, repaid nearly 400-thousand-rand sourced from a dubious multimillion-rand Lottery grant, but despite this, he could still face prosecution. Magogodela’s role is under scrutiny for an alleged corrupt 15-million-rand lottery grant to a non-profit organisation, Inqaba Yokulinda. The grant was intended for an athletics track project in Kimberley. Magogodela has repaid the funds to the Special Investigating Unit, but further legal action may follow.
# Soccer: German clubs are looking strong at the moment. Borussia Dortmund is through to the Champions League final after beating Paris Saint-Germain last night. Their opponents will be determined in Spain tonight when Bayern Munich takes on Real Madrid, with the tie level at two-all. Meanwhile Bayer Leverkusen has one foot in the Europa League final, as they lead Roma two-nil after the first leg of their semifinal. Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel says it is a boost in confidence for German clubs:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-62-cents and the euro at 20-rand-2-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-24-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-381-dollars-38-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-315-dollars-37-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-67-cents a barrel.
# And, the South African National Editors’ Forum has expressed deep sadness over the death of the news editor at The Citizen newspaper. Amanda Watson passed away yesterday after a short illness. The 56-year-old has been described as a dedicated journalist, maintaining the paper’s accuracy, fairness, and commitment to the news agenda. Watson’s career spanned various publications, including Caxton publications the North Eastern Tribune, and the Randburg Sun, before joining The Citizen in 2013. She rose through the ranks from senior reporter to deputy news editor and eventually news editor.
