# Springbok captain Siya Kolisi won Sports Star of the Year and People’s Choice Athlete of the Year at the South African Sports Awards held in North West. His teammates Eben Etzebeth won Sportsman of the Year and Manie Libbok Newcomer of the Year. Former Bok coach Jacques Nienaber won Coach of the Year, with the Springboks named Team of the Year. Other winners include sailor Kirsten Neuschäfer who won Sports Woman of the Year and sprint and long jump athlete Mpumelelo Mhlongo won Sportsman of the Year With a Disability.
# AfriForum’s Security Study Trust says drone training not only offers an exciting new direction for students but also a critical skill that will become increasingly important in future. Last week, it launched the first Skerpskut shooting event outside Pretoria. The event gives about a dozen students access to the fast-growing world of drone technology and numerous career opportunities every year. AfriForum’s Jacques Broodryk says drone training is a new direction for the trust:
# The future of Xhosa fashion will be a blend of Western designs and Xhosa aesthetic features, allowing for cultural representation while still preserving the distinctiveness of Xhosa traditional dress. This is according to the University of Pretoria master’s degree graduate in Consumer Science, specialising in Clothing Management, Zandile Zamela. In her master’s research, she sought to determine the impact of Westernisation on Xhosa women’s beauty standards and clothing habits. Zamela says she wants to be part of conserving her Xhosa culture’s aesthetic in modern society.
# The world’s largest floating book fair is in Durban. The MV Logos Hope ship is set to welcome book enthusiasts at the Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal from Wednesday until the second of next month. The ship last visited Durban in March 2016. eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, says Durban Tourism will utilise the book fair to promote the city as a world-class cruise port destination:
# And finally: A free Madonna concert on Brazil’s famous Copacabana beach was attended by an estimated 1.6-million fans. The show was the final stop on the 65-year-old’s Celebration Tour, which saw her do 80 shows across Europe and North America. Madonna performed songs such as Like a Prayer, Vogue and Express Yourself for over two hours. Brazilian pop artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar, as well as younger musicians from samba schools in Rio de Janeiro, participated in the show.
