# Marine biologists are calling for more action to protect the Great Barrier Reef. The Australian Institute of Marine Science estimates 73-percent of the reef has suffered prevalent bleaching. A climate scientist, professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, says the destruction of marine ecosystems will deliver an effective death sentence for around a quarter of all species that depend on reefs for survival. He adds it also threatens an estimated billion people who rely on reef fish for their food and livelihoods.
# Kenyan lawmakers are calling for the removal of the Agriculture secretary, Mithika Linturi, after fake fertiliser was distributed through a government subsidy programme. The National Assembly voted overwhelmingly for Linturi’s dismissal, accusing him of flouting integrity provisions and misusing public funds. Linturi denies wrongdoing and has initiated an internal probe.
# And finally: With this week being International Compost Awareness Week, the City of Cape Town will host a series of community engagement sessions. These are aimed at raising awareness of the critical issue surrounding organic waste disposal in landfills. Mayoral committee member for Urban Waste Management, Grant Twigg, says with the alarming rate at which organic waste is filling up landfills and contributing to climate change, it is becoming more important for residents to take proactive measures:
