# The United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation has awarded its World Press Freedom prize to all Palestinian journalists covering the war in Gaza. According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 97 members of the media have been killed since the war with Israel broke out last year, 92 of whom were Palestinians. Unesco director-general Audrey Azoulay has praised the journalists’ courage in difficult and dangerous circumstances.
Meanwhile, Healthcare Workers 4 Palestine SA together with the Gift of the Givers has donated over 400 pairs of school shoes to Durban Deep Primary School and Thulani Secondary School in Gauteng. This initiative, known as the Soles of our Souls campaign, aims to honour the memory of innocent children lost in Gaza, by providing essential school shoes to underprivileged South African children. Johannesburg’s mayoral committee member for Community Development, Lubabalo Magwentshu, says with limited resources, they are continuously seeking partnerships with organisations willing to address learners’ pressing needs.
# The search for Miss South Africa 2024 is underway, with entries open until next week Wednesday. Married women and those with children are still allowed to enter. Citizens will once again get to know the finalists through the reality competition television show Crown Chasers, which will broadcast on SABC3. Reigning Miss SA, Natasha Joubert, says entrants must know themselves well, as the competition is more than just about wardrobe, advocacy, and self-awareness.
# Charissa Button has made history by becoming the University of Pretoria’s first PhD graduate in Astrophysics. She first became interested in pursuing postgraduate studies in radio astronomy because of its unique perspective in exploring several fundamental questions in physics. These include the nature and effects of dark matter and the expansion of the universe. Button says during her studies in radio astronomy, she became interested in the vast array of physical processes that contribute to galaxy formation and evolution:
# And finally: Award-winning television creator and producer Shonda Rhimes, comedian Amy Schumer, Law and Order star Mariska Hargitay, and Brazilian singer Anitta were honoured at Variety‘s Power of Women event in New York. Rhimes was honoured for her work with Debbie Allen’s Dance Academy, and Schumer for the work she is doing with Everytown for Gun Safety. Last year’s honourees included award-winning singer Billie Eilish and Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone.
