# The Centre for Environmental Rights says the enactment of the Climate Change Bill sets the stage for comprehensive adaptation, mitigation and institutional arrangements. The objectives of the bill include enabling the development of an effective climate change response, and a long-term just transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy. The centre’s Brand Abdinor says the success of the bill will hinge on political will and constructive stakeholder consultation.
# The City of Cape Town has awarded the tender for its seven megawatts Atlantis solar photovoltaic project to the Lesedi Technoserve Consortium. The project is dedicated to achieving the city’s goal of net-zero carbon municipal buildings by 2030. Mayoral committee member for Energy, Beverley van Reenen, says the project is currently in the detailed phase of design, and the transmission of the first power into the grid is expected near the end of next year:
# And finally: Nations from the Group of Seven have agreed to work to reduce their reliance on civil nuclear-related goods from Russia, as major industrialised nations work to reset their energy plans while isolating Moscow. The group reached agreement on terms as part of the meeting under the body’s rotating presidency, now held by Italy. It marks a pivotal moment for nations looking to chart a sustainable path ahead for their energy needs, away from gas, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine up-ended a supply and demand equilibrium that had been in place for years.
