# The MK party says its national leadership has decided to expel five of its leaders as it continues to cleanse itself. Among them is Jabulani Khumalo, whom former president Jacob Zuma asked to register the party on his behalf. The others are Ray Khumalo, Bheki Manzini, Lebo Moepeng and Rochelle Davidson, also known as Gogo Mahlalaentabeni. MK party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela says the national leadership will always act and make decisions in the interest of all patriotic South Africans who want to see change.
# Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, has welcomed the 15-year direct imprisonment handed to Matome Tumi Sepesu for a robbery and hijacking incident targeting an emergency crew. Despite the successful conviction, three suspects remain at large. The department’s spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says recent attacks highlight ongoing risks to healthcare workers, prompting calls for community vigilance:
# The City of Cape Town has revealed its proposed budget of 18.5-billion-rand for water and sanitation in the upcoming 2024/25 financial year. An amount of 5.3-billion-rand has been earmarked for capital projects and 13.2-billion-rand for operations. Water and Sanitation mayoral committee member, Zahid Badroodien, says key priorities include building a water secure future, delivering clean, reliable drinking water and dignified sanitation services, reducing sewer overflows and improving treating wastewater investments in informal settlements. It also aims to provide new taps and toilets.
# Tennis: Defending Madrid Open champions Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka have won their opening clashes in the Spanish capital. Alcaraz returned after a month out with a forearm problem to begin his defence at home with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Kazakhstani Alexander Shevchenko. Belarus’ Sabalenka survived a tense tussle with Polish player Magda Linette, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Alcaraz took the Madrid title in the last two years, but his injury forced him to withdraw from the Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open.
# And, the CEO of the Pan South African Language Board Lance Schultz says Freedom Day provides a unique opportunity to celebrate linguistic diversity and reflect on how South Africans can each contribute towards the constitutional democracy. One way is by becoming champions of language rights and advocating for the promotion and use of their languages.
