# A group of young South African scientists has been selected to participate in the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Germany. The meeting is an opportunity for young scientists from around the world to engage in-depth with Nobel Laureates on research and overall career management aspects. One of the individuals selected to attend is Unisa graduate, doctor Bambesiwe May, who last year won the esteemed South African Women in Science Awards. May says this is a fantastic opportunity for her career.
# The University of Fort Hare has produced its first cohort of qualified speech and language therapists. The Health Professions Council of South Africa previously flagged issues with the curriculum, causing a delay in the graduation of students who enrolled in the four-year degree in 2018. The council finally cleared the programme in time for the 2024 graduation season. Thirteen students graduated. The university says graduates’ proficiency to practice in isiXhosa, is a first for the country and a huge leap forward in the field of speech therapy.
# The South African Institute of Professional Accountants has partnered with the University of Western Cape to introduce the SAIPA Accounting Technician Work Integrated Learning Programme. This groundbreaking initiative is designed to equip accounting students with real-world skills and experience that will differentiate them in the job market. The institute’s professor Rashied Small says the challenge of attaining work experience post-university abounds for South African youth, but programmes like this are tackling this issue head-on.
# Fans attending Comic-Con Cape Town, are promised an unforgettable experience of all things pop culture and gaming while rubbing shoulders with celebrities who bring this world to life. Headlining this year’s event is actor Sean Gunn, known for his roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Guardians of the Galaxy. Lesley-Ann Brandt loved for her portrayal of Mazikeen on the hit television series Lucifer, will also be in attendance. The festival runs from tomorrow until Monday at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
# And finally: A 12-string guitar played by Beatles stars John Lennon and George Harrison will go under the hammer as part of Julien’s Auctions music icons event next month. The Framus Hootenanny acoustic guitar was recently discovered at a home outside London, having been missing for over 50 years. The California-based auction house says the guitar was used by the band in 1965, featuring in recordings, sessions and performances of songs including Help, You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away and It’s Only Love.
