# Founder of Young Hearts Africa, doctor Wilhelm Lichtenberg, says his goal is to increase access to medical care for more children born with congenital heart disease while fostering research and training to bridge the skills gap. He recently received the Thoracic Surgery Foundation Every Heartbeat Matters Award, for his work in providing life-saving surgeries to South African children with the disease. Lichtenberg says Young Hearts Africa in partnership with the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town has to date provided life-saving surgery for 30 children with the disease.
# The City of Cape Town will showcase the transformative power of opera and classical music, as part of the Opera in Your Neighbourhood community concerts initiative. The initiative is a joint venture by the city, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, and Cape Town Opera. It aims to bring the allure and sophistication of opera to communities. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, says performances will be held in areas including Edgemead, Durbanville and Blouberg:
# The University of Pretoria awarded an honorary doctorate to the World Health Organisation’s regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti. She is the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from the institution’s Faculty of Health Sciences. Tukkies says the recognition is for her outstanding contribution as a leader, global health expert, advocate and diplomat. She has been at the helm of WHO Africa since 2015. Moeti says she believes strongly in the power of education to transform lives.
# Eight of former Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher’s special watches are expected to fetch over 90-million-rand in total at an auction in Switzerland next month. The luxury, personalised watches will be exhibited in New York from 3 to 5 May before the Christie’s auction in Geneva on the 13th. Schumacher’s family believes watch collectors would be able to appreaciate their true value. The German racing driver won seven world titles before sustaining a head injury in a skiing accident in 2013, whereafter he disappeared from public life.
# And finally: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 people in the music industry who will be inducted this year. They include Cher, Dionne Warwick, Ozzy Osbourne, and Mary J Blige. Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was inducted in 2006. Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of songwriter and producer, Norman Whitfield, whose catalogue of hits includes Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone and I Heard It Through the Grapevine.
