# Correctional Services has confirmed the death of a KwaZulu-Natal man accused of murdering his wife, Amanzimtoti pastor Liezel de Jager. Werner de Jager is suspected to have committed suicide in the Westville prison by taking a drug overdose, but the department just said he was taken to a Durban hospital following medical complications. They were informed of his death earlier today. Liezel de Jager was killed at the couple’s home in October 2021, and her husband was arrested and charged in November last year.
# AfriForum Youth has delivered a memorandum to the Presidency opposing the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The organisation condemns the bill, likening it to historical anglicisation policies post-Anglo-Boer War, which suppressed Afrikaans. Spokesperson Louis Boshoff argues the BELA Bill threatens Afrikaans instruction. Boshoff highlights clauses limiting school language policies and parental teaching rights, warning of cultural ethnic cleansing if passed:
# The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa has announced initiation schools will not operate before the elections on 29 May. CONTRALESA’s president, Kgoshi Lameck Mokoena, told the media initiates will have time to vote, as there are no special provisions for them. # Athletics: A young Lithuanian discuss thrower bettered a world record that was set years before he was born. Mykolas Alekna produced a throw of 74.35-metres at a meeting in Oklahoma in the United States. Jurgen Schult of Germany set the previous record of 74.08-metres in 1986. Alekna’s father, Virgilijus, is now third on the list of the best throws of all times with the 73.88-metres he produced in 2000. The 21-year-old athlete won silver in the item at the world championships, and bronze the next year.
