# The latest Radio Audience Measurement data shows the radio industry is thriving in South Africa, with 75-percent of people 15 years and older tuning in weekly for an average of five-hours-and-12 minutes daily. The data shows as digital platforms grow, broadcast radio co-exists strongly, with 68-percent of social media users and 76-percent of music streamers being weekly radio listeners as well. The Broadcast Research Council of South Africa highlights radio’s resilience across languages and platforms as a key factor for its growth.
Meanwhile, the University of South Africa says it is proud that one of its former radio newsreaders has been nominated for the Mail and Guardian Top 200 Young South Africans in the category of Film and Media. The initiative recognises future leaders who have a positive effect on society. Tshego Magolego, who joined Unisa Radio in 2016, says making the list is validating and reassuring for him. The likes of Trevor Noah and Julius Malema are Top 200 alumni. Magolego is also the author of a book titled Sipho’s Pink Dress.
# The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service has donated 45-thousand-rand to the Red Cross War Children’s Hospital. The money will go towards the burns service. Burns are the third leading cause of injury-related deaths in children. The hospital’s specialised burns ward admits 800 to one-thousand children every year. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says firefighters are not only willing to put their lives on the line, but their passion goes beyond the job.
# The University of Fort Hare’s Faculty of Education has co-edited a book, to equip undergrad, postgrad, teachers, and lecturers, with the essential skills for a successful career in education. The university says the book titled Foundations of Education: From Contemporary Social Perspectives, offers a comprehensive exploration of the underlying principles that drive the teaching and learning process. North West University professor, Charl Wolhuter, is one of the editors. Fort Hare professor Mzuyanda Percival Mavuso says the crucial role of educators in shaping future generations is undeniable.
# And, hard rock band Kiss has sold its music catalogue, name, and image to a Sweden-based music investment firm, Pophouse Entertainment, in a deal worth over 5.6-billion-rand. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band has sold some 100 million records over the past 50 years. Kiss co-founder Gene Simmons says they have always been breaking new ground in popular culture, and this partnership will ensure they continue to do so for years to come. The likes of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen have also sold their catalogues.
