# The DA leader says the allegations against Mashatile are a mirror-image of state capture
# The Outa CEO describes the e-toll debacle as a harsh lesson for government
# And, cricket: Kolkata cruise to a win in Bengaluru
# The DA leader John Steenhuisen says the allegations against deputy president Paul Mashatile are a mirror-image of the state capture modus operandi the country saw during the Jacob Zuma administration. Steenhuisen spoke at the Cape Town Press Club. Millions allegedly went to Mashatile’s children and associates and funded his lavish lifestyle. Steenhuisen says in this case too, president Cyril Ramaphosa continues to shield his fellow cadre at all costs. He says Ramaphosa can no longer blame the rampant corruption that has only increased under his administration, on his predecessor.
# The CEO of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, Wayne Duvenage, says the e-toll debacle has been a harsh lesson for government. He says the scheme had all the signs of failure long before it was launched in December 2013, yet government proceeded without listening to its citizens. Duvenage says government persisted for years, resulting in the waste of billions of rand in taxpayers’ money:
# KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a massive manhunt for the suspects who shot and killed four people at the Uganda informal settlement in Umlazi on Thursday night. A group of friends were drinking in a shack when at least six suspects stormed in and demanded cellphones. Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says the victims reportedly refused, and one of the suspects then opened fire:
# Cricket: Virat Kohli batted out the innings for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru with his second straight IPL half-century, but the Kolkata Knight Riders still cruised to a seven-wicket victory in Bangalore. Chasing the home side’s 182 for six, Kolkata reached their target with 19 balls to spare with a six from skipper Shreyas Iyer. Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis praised Phil Salt for his quick-fire 30 and Sunil Narine, who hit 47, as they opened the visitors’ innings with a partnership of 86.
# And to end with: ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says Easter prompts reflection on the potential for rejuvenation and optimism in South Africa. This year’s Easter Weekend takes place ahead of an important national election, and therefore, together with millions of fellow South Africans, they pray for the nation’s future and prosperity. Mashaba is urging all South Africans to prioritize road safety, refrain from driving under the influence, and comply with law enforcement directives:
