# The National Prosecuting Authority reportedly assembled a strong team to bring a litany of charges against former Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste and other former senior executives today. Jooste allegedly took his own life at his Hermanus home yesterday. His death comes after the Financial Sector Conduct Authority fined him 475-million-rand for misrepresenting Steinhoff’s financial statements. According to the Daily Maverick, advocates Michelle le Roux, Wim Trengove, and Michael Mbikiwa, were set to be sworn in by a judge today, to act as state prosecutors in the Steinhoff case.
# Education Activist, Hendrick Makaneta, has lauded the ANC-led government for enabling access to education over the past 30 years. He says education as a human right should be celebrated and protected, also acknowledging that there is still much to be done as a nation, to address some of the outstanding issues. Makaneta says these include pit latrines, safe and reliable scholar transport for all, overcrowding in classrooms, and historical student debt amongst others. He advocates the need for government, civil society, and the private sector to address education’s evolving challenges.
# The GOOD Party in Gauteng says it is clear that the province’s water system has not been well maintained, a reflection of the infrastructure deficit in South Africa due to historic injustices. For weeks residents have been experiencing a water shortage in parts of the province. GOOD Party’s, Dewan de Swardt, says about 25-percent of fresh drinking water in Gauteng is lost due to leaks. He says in the City of Johannesburg the loss rises to 44-percent:
# Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged European Union leaders to increase support with more air cover to protect eastern cities from Russian bombardment. He spoke during the first day of the EU leaders’ summit in Brussels yesterday. Zelenskyy says there are five crucial elements to defend Ukraine and all of Europe from Russian aggression and terror. He says these are air defence, artillery ammunition, political unity, the freezing of Russian assets, and ensuring Europe’s defence is self-sufficient:
# Soccer: Gauteng police have launched a manhunt following the shooting of former Bafana Bafana coach Stanley Tshabalala. He was shot and injured during a burglary at his home in Centurion, Tshwane. Tshabalala was the first Bafana Bafana head coach when South Africa was readmitted into international soccer in 1992. He also served as Mamelodi Sundowns coach and has gone on to occupy various prominent positions within Orlando Pirates since 2008. Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, says Tshabalala is recovering in the hospital:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-92-cents and the euro at 20-rand-51-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-91-cents and Bitcoin trades at 65-thousand-858-dollars-14-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-173-dollars-66-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 85-dollars-16-cents a barrel.
