# Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, says the Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure Centre has propelled the healthcare facility into a league of its own in the area of nuclear medicine and research in Africa. The centre is housed at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria. The MEC says the centre has futuristic infrastructure that will help improve the quality of life and overall survival of cancer patients using radiopharmaceuticals:
# A new documentary by two University of Pretoria professors is set to premiere in Springbok in the Northern Cape later this month. The documentary captures the diminishing expertise of traditional midwives amid the global shift towards Western medical practices. Titled Vroedvrou, the documentary is directed by African studies professor, Siona O’Connell, and the institution’s vice-principal for Academics, Loretta Feris. O’Connell says they wanted to capture the richness of traditional midwifery and raise awareness about the indispensable role of traditional midwives in the Northern Cape.
# The Tshwane University of Technology says two national heritage treasures that have offered unparalleled opportunities for experiential learning and teaching to students, will be unveiled tomorrow. The two sites are on Toppieshoek, on the banks of Hartbeespoort Dam. They are the Broederstroom Early Iron Age archaeological site and the other is the former Leiden University Observatory Southern Station. The university says a book titled, The Heritage Treasures of Toppieshoek, which describes the sites and their history has been published.
# Oscar nominees will receive stuff like beauty products, movie-inspired chocolates, gourmet popcorn, a Rubik’s Cube and a stay in a luxury chalet in the Swiss Alps. Each goodie bag containing about 60 items is worth over three-million-rand. Reuters reports companies pay a fee to put their product in the bags in return for potentially priceless exposure to A-list actors. The annual Academy Awards take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, with Oppenheimer favourite to win several awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
# And finally: Media mogul Rupert Murdoch is engaged for a sixth time. The 92-year-old is reportedly set to marry 67-year-old retired Russian molecular biologist Elena Zhukova. They met at a party hosted by his third ex-wife, Chinese-born entrepreneur Wendi Deng. According to the New York Times, invitations for the wedding, which will be held at Moraga, Murdoch’s California vineyard and estate in June, have already been sent out. Murdoch’s publicly traded and New York-based company News Corp owns hundreds of local, national and international digital news outlets.
