# The City of Cape Town’s Old Granary building in District Six has been renamed the Desmond and Leah Tutu House, to honour and memorialise the life and work of the late Archbishop and his wife. In 2015, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation co-funded the refurbishment of the building, to allow the foundation to use the space as a peace centre, archive centre, museum, and office space. Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, says the building is a wonderful metaphor for the power of transformation and healing.
# The University of South Africa will be celebrating International Mother Language Day at its Muckleneuk campus in Pretoria today, under the theme, Multilingual education: a pillar of learning and intergenerational learning. International Mother Language Day is observed every year to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Unisa’s, doctor Napjadi Letsoalo, says the key item on the programme is the private screening of a 30-minute documentary titled Language of my Soul, which is about the N|uu language, starring Ouma Katrina Esau:
# Comic-Con Cape Town, the highly anticipated celebration of pop culture, is making a return to the Mother City from the 27th of April to the first of May this year. The likes of international comic book icon, Dan Didio, and Durban-local, Anand Ramcheron, who has contributed artwork to the Marvel: Crisis Protocol board game, will be in attendance. Organisers say Comic Con Cape Town offers something for everyone, from hardcore fans to casual enthusiasts. Tickets are available from 190-rand.
# Beyoncé has made history by becoming the first black woman to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart after her track Texas Hold ‘Em debuted at number one. Her other new country song 16 Carriages is at number nine on the chart. Beyoncé is also the first woman to have topped both the Hot Country and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts since the lists began in 1958. Both singles will appear on the second instalment of her Renaissance trilogy, set for release on the 29th of next month.
# And finally: Oscar-winning director, Sam Mendes, plans to direct four separate feature films, one from each Beatles member’s point of view. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison have granted full life story and music rights for the scripted films. Mendes says he is honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time. Sony Pictures Entertainment will finance and distribute all four films set to be released in 2027.
