# Soccer: Hundreds of supporters have welcomed back the bronze medal-winning Bafana Bafana squad at the OR Tambo International Airport this morning. South Africa beat the Democratic Republic of Congo to finish third in the Africa Cup of Nations which was eventually won by hosts Ivory Coast. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, and EFF leader, Julius Malema, were some of the dignitaries that greeted the squad at the airport. Bafana Bafana captain, Ronwen Williams, says they are proud of their achievement:
# In celebration of world-renowned artist Esther Mahlangu’s illustrious career, Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town will host an exhibition titled Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting. Curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, the exhibition highlights Mahlangu’s over 50-year-long career and her meteoric rise as a contemporary artist. The exhibition will run from Sunday until the eleventh of August. From there it will then begin its global tour, stopping first at Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa, before moving to the US in early 2026.
# Twenty emerging visual artists recently participated in a one-day masterclass facilitated by the City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Branch. The branch’s Emerging Artists Programme aims to assist under-resourced, inexperienced, and relatively unknown artists in Cape Town. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, says the emerging artists represent a multitude of cultures, backgrounds and artistic approaches:
# The University of South Africa says it appoints distinguished academics in various positions, including management roles. In a significant milestone for women in leadership, Unisa appointed professor Zethu Nkosi as the Executive Dean of its College of Human Sciences. Nkosi says leadership is a dynamic force that encompasses guiding and inspiring others to reach their full potential. She added that her leadership philosophy reflects a commitment to ethical and compassionate decision-making.
# And finally: R&B singer and songwriter Usher’s halftime Super Bowl performance at the Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium on Sunday drew 129.3-million viewers, making it the most watched ever. He performed a medley of hits, including Caught Up, Burn, Love In This Club, featuring cameos by Alicia Keys, will.i.am, Lil Jon, Ludacris and H.E.R. Rihanna’s halftime Super Bowl performance last year and Katy Perry’s 2015 performance both drew 121-million viewers.
