# Ramaphosa calls on voters to give the ANC another opportunity to govern
# Motlanthe proposes a sovereign wealth fund to strengthen economic growth
# And: More than five-thousand people have now died in the DRC’s deadliest Ebola outbreak
# President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on voters to give the ANC another opportunity to govern. He addressed the Limpopo ANC rally in Polokwane, Limpopo, yesterday ahead of the local government elections on Wednesday. Ramaphosa outlined the party’s priorities, including job creation, water and electricity infrastructure upgrades, and fighting criminality such as gender based violence and corruption. He emphasised that the ANC has the experience and capacity to deliver on its service delivery commitments:
# Former president Kgalema Motlanthe says South Africa could establish a sovereign wealth fund, using a share of future mineral revenues, proceeds from state assets and other sustainable contributions. He took part in the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation’s Drakensberg Inclusive Growth Forum debate on economic growth stimulation and job creation. Motlanthe stated that the aim would be to convert finite natural resources into lasting economic assets, including infrastructure, domestic supply chains and skills:
# The Road Accident Fund says it will proceed with the implementation of the appointment of Waseem Carrim as CEO, with a clear focus on stability, accountability and results. The High Court in Pretoria dismissed an urgent application by the City of uMhlathuze Municipality chief financial officer, Mxolisi Kunene, who sought to prevent Carrim from taking up the position. Kunene argued that he was the highest-scoring candidate during the RAF’s executive recruitment process. RAF says no interim order arising from this application prevents the implementation of Carrim’s appointment.
# KwaZulu-Natal acting Police Commissioner Phumelele Makoba says no marches will be allowed on local government election day on Wednesday. Recent violent demonstrations in Durban led police to seek a court order against disruptive and violent protests. Makoba says police have identified 331 high-risk voting stations across the country, with KwaZulu-Natal having the highest number, with 165 flagged, including 124 in the eThekwini district:
# The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed five-thousand, as authorities battle the country’s largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak on record. Ten-thousand-300 cases have been recorded in eight of the country’s 26 provinces. The Bundibugyo species is behind the current outbreak, but there is no treatment or vaccine for this strain yet. The outbreak is the second-largest globally, after the 2014–2016 epidemic in West Africa. Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda have also confirmed Ebola cases.
# And, rugby: The Bulls ran in eight tries to secure a comfortable 54-26 win over Scarlets at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, moving up to second on the United Rugby Championship log. In Cape Town, Yaqeen Ahmed scored 13 points as the Stormers notched four successive bonus-point wins with a 33-7 win over Ulster. Gianni Lombard and Ivan van Zyl dotted down in either half as the Sharks claimed a 15-3 win over Munster in Ireland. The URC pauses this month for the Nations Championship.
