# And motorsport: Lewis Hamilton hopes for rain in Singapore
# South African-born jurist Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace, human rights and international law. Born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal during apartheid, Pillay has served as a South African and international judge and as the United Nations human rights chief. The Nobel committee’s Jorgen Watne Frydnes says Pillay’s work highlights the importance of justice and the rule of law in building lasting peace:
# Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi says law enforcement agencies are managing the situation in Soweto amid anti-immigration protests. Lesufi says additional resources, including the defence force, have been mobilised to help maintain order. Lesufi says the government is engaging with organisers who have raised concerns peacefully, to find solutions through dialogue. However, he warned that those involved in violence and property destruction would face the law:
# The Gauteng Department of Health is launching a Diabetic Retinopathy Screening and Management Programme today at Tshwane District Hospital in partnership with ORBIS International. The initiative forms part of Eye Care Awareness Month and aims to improve access to eye care and prevent avoidable blindness linked to diabetes. It focuses on early detection, referral and treatment, while bringing screening closer to primary healthcare facilities. The pilot includes Laudium, Eersterus and Bophelong clinics, with healthcare workers receiving training to integrate eye care into chronic disease management.
News from abroad….
# French aircraft manufacturer Airbus announced the delivery of 72 planes last month; one less than in September last year. This increased deliveries for the first nine months of the year to 547, which is eight-percent more than 2025. Meanwhile it’s reported that Biman Bangladesh Airlines has placed an order with Airbus for the manufacturing of ten planes, which will increase the national carrier’s total number of planes to 35. The airline also ordered 25 aircraft from Boeing earlier this year.
# Motorsport: Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton is hoping for wet weather at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, saying he thrives on the challenge of racing in the rain. The seven-time world champion finished third in last weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia after starting on dry tyres in slippery conditions and recovering from 18th place. Hamilton says difficult weather tests drivers’ skills and creates opportunities to make a difference. Rain could affect Saturday’s sprint race and Sunday’s Grand Prix. With only one practice session before sprint qualifying, teams will have limited time to prepare.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-52-cents and the euro at 18-rand-54-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-87-cents and Bitcoin trades at 82-thousand-603-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-186-dollars-92-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 105-dollars-78-cents a barrel.
