Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Eleven people are killed in a mass shooting in KwaMakhutha, KwaZulu-Natal
# The US plans to welcome another 17-thousand-500 refugees from South Africa
# And rugby: The Springbok coach is rolling the dice in his selection for the Wallabies Test
# Eleven people were killed, including a pregnant woman, and three others were injured in a mass shooting in Durban’s KwaMakhutha township yesterday evening. Police say the victims were gathered at a home in the Ziko area when unknown gunmen stormed in and opened fire. The attackers also set fire to a car belonging to one of the victims. Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says they have launched a manhunt for three suspects:
# US president Donald Trump’s administration plans to accept another 17-thousand-500 refugees, primarily White Afrikaner South Africans, over the next 12 months. Trump has repeatedly claimed Afrikaners face persecution based on their race, allegations the South African government has strongly denied. This resettlement effort is projected to cost the US government approximately 8.11-billion-rand. The State Department has told Congress it anticipates that Afrikaners will fully integrate into the US in a manner that preserves taxpayer resources for American citizens.
Meanwhile, union federation SAFTU is concerned about escalating threats by the US against South Africa following the government’s response to Washington’s so-called “five asks”. In June last year, the US demanded action concerning violence against farmers; the “Kill the Boer” chant; expropriation without compensation; aspects of broad-based black economic empowerment; and the country’s foreign-policy posture. SAFTU’s Asive Dyani says they reject the use of economic, diplomatic or geopolitical power to dictate South Africa’s policies:
# Political parties and independent candidates contesting the November local government elections will sign the code of conduct pledge in Midrand, Gauteng, today. They will reaffirm their commitment to upholding the electoral code of conduct and its new supporting code on countering disinformation. The code sets out the standards of conduct expected during the election period, with consequences provided for in law where it is contravened. According to the Electoral Commission, 136-thousand-790 candidates have been certified to contest ten-thousand-526 council seats.
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus admits that he is rolling the dice in his team selection for Sunday’s one-off Test against Australia in Perth. He has made 13 changes to his starting team, with only lock Eben Etzebeth and wing Ethan Hooker remaining from the side which beat the All Blacks 43-28 in Baltimore. Erasmus says he is trying to work out the balance of the team with the Nations Championship and next year’s World Cup in mind:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-21-cents and the euro at 18-rand-52-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-59-cents and Bitcoin trades at 86-thousand-378-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-329-dollars-77-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 99-dollars-13-cents a barrel.
