# Johannesburg Metro Police Department Internal Affairs head Elmarie de Beer has highlighted serious operational challenges at the unit during testimony before the Madlanga commission. She says the unit has only 38 personnel, leaving it severely understaffed. De Beer says investigations, particularly those involving misconduct and corruption, can take longer because of capacity constraints, while efforts are underway to secure additional investigators:

# DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis says the discovery of the bodies of six women in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, since July shows the need for stronger action against violent crime. According to Hill-Lewis, government must improve investigations and ensure those responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice. He calls for more visible law enforcement, better lighting and surveillance, and closer cooperation between police and communities:

# South African petrochemicals group Sasol has signed a fuel supply agreement with Antarctic expedition company White Desert, supporting flights to the remote continent. Sasol says the deal will provide aviation fuel for White Desert’s specialised polar operations which transport scientists, tourists and support teams to Antarctica. The fuel includes sustainable aviation fuel, produced by co-processing used cooking oil and vegetable oils, reducing its carbon footprint compared with conventional jet fuel. White Desert operates private jet flights from Cape Town to Antarctica.

# Tennis: Italian Jannik Sinner has announced a demanding schedule to end the year as world number one. Alexander Zverev of Germany closed the gap on him when winning the US Open, as a knee problem kept Sinner out of the entire North American hard court swing. Sinner plans to play in several tournaments before November’s season-ending ATP Finals in Turin in his home country. He became number one again in April, winning Wimbledon in July to take his Grand Slam title tally to five.

# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-26-cents and the euro at 18-rand-77-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-92-cents and Bitcoin trades at 76-thousand-934-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-272-dollars-41-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 107-dollars-98-cents a barrel.

# And finally: Build One South Africa says voting for a smaller party is not a wasted vote as the country marks International Day of Democracy, 50 days before the local elections. The party’s Graham Charters says old parties benefit from the myth that only they are viable. He says South Africa is in a coalition era, and voters should choose parties that best reflect their values:
