# The Impeachment Committee has voted to oppose the EFF’s Western Cape High Court challenge to its decision to rescind the recommendation of advocate Thandazani Madonsela as evidence leader. The African Legal Professionals Association has also launched a similar legal challenge. Nineteen committee members voted in favour of opposing the legal challenges, while nine voted against the motion. The EFF’s Omphile Maotwe argues that the committee rescinding its decision puts Parliament’s powers and decision-making at risk:

# Airports Company South Africa says it is pursuing a strategy underpinned by four pillars: expansion, modernisation, competitiveness, and global positioning. The company reported a strong performance for the 2025/2026 financial year, with a 98-percent passenger recovery compared with pre-Covid-19 levels and an 8.5-percent increase in passenger traffic year-on-year. ACSA acting CEO Charles Shilowa says they will introduce the passenger mobilisation programme to encourage more people to visit airports, even when they are not travelling:

# Deputy National Commissioner for Policing, Tebello Mosikili, says police are intensifying their fight against organised drug networks deliberately targeting properties being used to conceal illicit operations. Two foreign nationals were arrested yesterday following the discovery of a mandrax drug laboratory in Erasmia, west of Pretoria. Approximately 800-thousand mandrax tablets were being manufactured daily in the lab. Mosikili says police will continue working with the Hawks and other law-enforcement agencies to identify and dismantle criminal networks:

# At least five people are dead, and 87 people are missing after a fire broke out on a ferry in the Philippines. The MV June Aster had set off from the Port of Manila with 134 passengers and crew members and was travelling south towards Coron in the tourist province of Palawan when it caught fire. The Philippine Coast Guard captain Noemi Cayabyab says emergency teams safely pulled 42 survivors from the area, including 38 passengers and four crew members. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

# Soccer: Paris St-Germain got their Champions League title defence off to a winning start, thrashing Slovan Bratislava 6-1. Spanish World Cup winner Ferran Torres scored a hat-trick as PSG aim to win the competition for a third consecutive time. Martin Ødegaard’s 75th-minute strike earned last season’s runners-up Arsenal a hard-fought 1-0 win against Napoli. Five-time champions Barcelona defeated Feyenoord 5-1 with Raphinha scoring a brace. Liverpool came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1, while Sporting and Stuttgart also won.

# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-4-cents and the euro at 18-rand-66-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-74-cents, and Bitcoin trades at 78-thousand-325-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-408-dollars-39-cents a fine ounce, and Brent crude oil is quoted at 102-dollars-69-cents a barrel.
