# President Cyril Ramaphosa met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spoljaric, in Pretoria yesterday, for discussions on strengthening respect for international humanitarian law and the rules of war. South Africa is one of the six founding states of the Global International Humanitarian Law Initiative, which has mobilised 118 states, including 27 African countries. Spoljaric says that with over one-third of armed conflicts taking place in Africa, she hopes more countries will unite around a shared commitment to preserve humanity in war.

# The EFF has vehemently rejected the rescinding of advocate Thandazani Madonsela’s appointment as evidence leader of the Impeachment Committee without material evidence. Madonsela’s recommendation was rescinded amid a legal review of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s objection related to the Phala Phala scandal. The 31 members of the Impeachment Committee from 16 political parties have until Friday to make more nominations for an evidence leader. The EFF’s Omphile Maotwe says the list of available candidates must be expanded:

# The Legal Practice Council has categorically denied reports that controversial lawyer Malesela Teffo has been reinstated or readmitted to the legal profession. This comes after Teffo made a surprise appearance at the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg during the attempted murder trial of businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala and his four co-accused. Teffo maintains he is in good standing with the council. Legal Practice Council Gauteng director Ignatius Briel told the SABC that they have now obtained a warrant of arrest against Teffo:

# The US military launched new airstrikes on Iranian targets, leaving four people dead, including a four-year-old child, and more than 50 injured. The US Central Command says the strikes followed recent attempted attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Tehran targeted American interests in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq. Iran says the more the US military persists in its aggression in the region, the greater and heavier the losses it will have to endure.

# Tennis: Gael Monfils celebrated his 40th birthday in style as he progressed to the second round of the US Open. The Frenchman, who will retire at the end of the season, defeated Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. Fifth-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli needed five sets to beat Argentina’s Francisco Comesana. In the women’s draw, Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina, who is chasing the world number ranking, eased past American wildcard Thea Frodin, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the second round. Americans Coco Gauff and Madison Keys also won.

# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-17-cents and the euro at 18-rand-72-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-83-cents, and Bitcoin trades at 77-thousand-524-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-291-dollars-62-cents a fine ounce, and Brent crude oil is quoted at 97-dollars-60-cents a barrel.
