# We start off with rugby: The Currie Cup semifinal teams have been confirmed. Defending champions Griquas secured a commanding 45-17 victory to end Boland Kavaliers’ semifinal hopes in the final pool match in Wellington in the Western Cape. Griquas dislodged the Cheetahs at the top of the log to set up a semifinal clash against fourth-placed Lions in Kimberley on Saturday. The other semifinal will see second-placed Cheetahs welcoming third-placed Pumas to Bloemfontein. The final is scheduled for next weekend.

# Cricket: Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is in a race against time to be fit for the upcoming home three-Test series against Australia in October. He suffered a right hamstring injury during training with his domestic side, the Lions. Rabada has already been ruled out of the one-day series against Australia, beginning next month. Cricket South Africa says Rabada’s availability for the Test series will depend on how he progresses through his rehabilitation, with a decision on his selection to be made closer to the series.

# Golf: Four-time major champion Scottie Scheffler claimed a second FedExCup title in three years at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, securing his 22nd PGA Tour title. The world number one finished on 16 under, three shots clear of Norwegian Viktor Hovland. American debutant Ryan Gerard finished third. Scheffler, who joins Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods as the only multiple FedExCup champions, says being able to win tournaments throughout the season is a good feeling:

# Tennis: Argentina’s Mariano Navone stunned 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the first round of the US Open. The Serbian, who was struggling physically, went down in five sets to the world number 49, marking his first loss in the opening round of a major since 2006. 2021’s champion, Russian Daniil Medvedev, beat French qualifier Hugo Gaston in straight sets. In the women’s draw, American Jessica Pegula defeated Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse in two sets, while there were also first-round victories for Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and Italian Jasmine Paolini.

And finally, more tennis, Swiss maestro Roger Federer says his induction into the hall of fame is one of the greatest honours of his life. The 20-time Grand Slam champion tearfully accepted the honour at a ceremony in Rhode Island, America. He made his professional debut at the age of 16 in 1998 and went on to win eight Wimbledon singles titles, six Australian Opens, five US Opens and the French Open in 2009. Federer says fame was never his goal, but rather to spend his life doing something he loves.
