# Minister of Health, Joe Phaahla, says 46 suspected cholera cases and five laboratory-confirmed cases have been recorded between the first of January and the first of this month. Three of these cases were imported from the neighbouring country of Zimbabwe which is currently battling the outbreak of this diarrheal disease. According to Phaahla, two cases of an 11-year-old and 13-year-old in Limpopo, without travel history, suggest local transmission risk. He urges the public to exercise caution and maintain hygiene practices:
# The DA welcomes Mineral Resources and Energy minister Gwede Mantashe’s extention of the deadline for public comments on the draft Integrated Resource Plan to 23 March. The party had requested the extension, citing an inexplicable delay in the plan’s release and insufficient time for stakeholders to review its merits. The DA’s Kevin Mileham says they are preparing submissions, intending to spotlight inconsistencies in the current version. These include the disconnection between the projected energy availability factor and generation capacity improvements.
# The DA in Tshwane says it condemns president Cyril Ramaphosa’s blatant attempt to score cheap political points while campaigning for the ANC in Mamelodi. Ramaphosa said the challenges people in Mamelodi face, including the water crisis, are all down to the failure of the DA-led government in Tshwane. The DA’s Kwena Moloto, says it appears that the president is more interested in politicking than addressing critical issues that communities face:
# Registration for rewriting the National Senior Certificate exams will close in the Western Cape in four days. The provincial Education Department has urged matric candidates unsatisfied with their results to seize the opportunity of the Second Chance Matric Programme. Spokesperson Bronagh Hammond emphasised the programme’s benefits, including free tutoring for registered private candidates:
# Buckingham Palace has confirmed that king Charles the Third has been diagnosed with cancer and has started treatment. The diagnosis was made recently while the king underwent treatment at the London Clinic for a benign enlarged prostate. The Palace says subsequent diagnostic tests identified a form of cancer, but it is not prostate. The 75-year-old will pause all public engagements. The Palace adds that the King remains positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.
# Cricket: The young Proteas are playing India in Benoni, Gauteng, today for a place in Sunday’s final of the Under 19 World Cup. The hosts ended the Super Sixes phase in second place in Group 2 behind Australia, who will play Pakistan in tomorrow’s other semifinal on the same field. India and Pakistan ended in first and second place in Group 1, respectively. The final will also take place at Willowmoore Park on the East Rand. India has won the tournament for a record five times.
