# We begin with soccer: French captain Kylian Mbappé has won the Golden Boot for the World Cup, becoming the first player to win the award twice. He scored ten goals and is also the tournament’s all-time top scorer with 22. A key figure in Spain’s run to a second men’s World Cup triumph, captain Rodri, won the Golden Ball for the tournament’s best player, while 19-year-old Spaniard Pau Cubarsi was named the best young player. Spain’s Unai Simón claimed the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper after conceding just once in eight games.

Meanwhile, Spain won an amount of 827-million-rand for clinching its second World Cup title. Argentina received 545-millon-rand. World governing body FIFA awarded a record-breaking 10.83-billion-rand in prize money. That is apart from the 14.4-billion-rand paid to the 48 participating teams, which include baseline preparation and qualification payouts.  

# Rugby: The Springboks will welcome back several regulars, including captain Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, for next month’s one-off Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires. The Boks have claimed bonus-point victories over England, Scotland and Wales at the start of the inaugural Nations Championship. Coach Rassie Erasmus says the squad will be split, leaving a group in South Africa to prepare for the All Blacks’ visit:

# Golf: New Zealander Ryan Fox won the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in England to capture his maiden major title. The 39-year-old shot a two-under 68 to finish one ahead of American Cameron Young and lift the Claret Jug. Another American, Sam Burns, finished two strokes back in third after a final-round 72. Englishman Tommy Fleetwood finished in a share of fourth alongside American world number one, Scottie Scheffler. Fox says he nearly quit the sport, but is glad he didn’t:

# And motorsport: Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli won his sixth race of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix. The 19-year-old Italian fought back from losing position during a virtual safety-car period to pass Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and become the first driver in five years to convert pole position into a victory at Spa-Francorchamps. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished third. Antonelli has increased his championship title lead over Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton to 45 points and to 50 over his teammate George Russell, who was taken out in a collision on the first lap.
