# A Zeerust operation leads to the arrest of 13 undocumented migrants

# Police in the North West have arrested 13 undocumented migrants during an unannounced Operation Shanela in Zeerust. The multidisciplinary operation involved the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit, the Illicit Mining Team, and the Department of Home Affairs. The suspects, aged between 22 and 48, are nationals of Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are expected to be processed under immigration laws. Police also recovered a sewing machine and a butcher’s knife, reported as lost property.

# The National Liquor Traders Council says it is intensifying efforts to educate young people about the dangers of underage drinking following the Enyobeni Tavern judgment. Spokesperson Lucky Ntimane says the KuGompo Regional Court’s finding that the tragedy could have been prevented highlights the need for stricter compliance with liquor laws and greater public awareness. Ntimane says the council will continue to promote responsible alcohol trading and help prevent similar tragedies:

# Build One South Africa has announced Nongelo Chiume as its mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni. Chiume says he wants to transform the metro into South Africa’s leading manufacturing and industrial hub by attracting investment, creating jobs and improving infrastructure. He also pledged to tackle corruption, strengthen law enforcement, and improve service delivery, to drive economic growth and restore public confidence in local government:

# The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse says greater transparency in tender processes can help expose irregularities and protect public funds. This comes amid damning revelations on the SAPS at the Madlanga Commission. OUTA CEO Wayne Duvenage told SABC News that the e-Tender Portal can play a key role in monitoring government procurement and detecting corruption. He emphasised that political will and accountability are still needed:

# Rugby: French club Béziers is mourning the death of South African rugby player Luqobo “Bibo” Makwedini, who died after collapsing during training. French media and club reports attribute his death to a suspected cardiac arrest. The 20-year-old, a former South Africa Under-18 representative and Wynberg Boys’ High School learner, had recently joined the club’s academy in the south of France. He was regarded as a rising star, a valued teammate whose kindness and commitment left a lasting impression.

# And soccer: England’s Jude Bellingham scored twice to end Norway’s historic run and reach the World Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 win after extra-time in their quarter-final clash in Florida, USA yesterday. In the other quarter-final encounter, defending champions Argentina overcame 10-man Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in Kansas City, Missouri. France will take on Spain in Texas on Tuesday in the one semi-final, and on Wednesday, England will face Argentina in Atlanta, Georgia.
