# Border Management Authority commissioner, Michael Masiapato announced that government and other stakeholders have intensified their immigration enforcement operations across the country. BMA spokesperson, Mmemme Mogotsi says yesterday, the BMA, police and Home Affairs facilitated the repatriation of 673 Malawian nationals and 202 Zimbabwean nationals through Beitbridge. She says the Zimbabwean nationals were transported on three buses from Gauteng, while the Malawian repatriation operation involved five buses from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal and a further five buses from Cape Town:
# KwaZulu-Natal police has confirmed that a 29-year-old foreign national was killed in suspected xenophobic attack at the Joe Jika informal settlement in Pietermaritzburg yesterday. Police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda says the deceased was allegedly attacked by a group of people at Sable Flats Manor but managed to escape and fled to the informal settlement. He says the deceased slipped into a river and was found on the river bed with severe head injuries. He adds that the circumstances that led to the attack and the subsequent death are under investigation.
# As South Africa kicks off the IEC’s Voter Registration Weekend, the DA is calling on every eligible voter to use it to register to vote for the upcoming local government elections on the fourth of November. The party’s Sithembiso Ngema says in some provinces, residents are living with the consequences of poor governance as municipalities continue to struggle with financial mismanagement, deteriorating infrastructure, and declining service delivery. He says municipalities should exist to serve residents, not politicians:
# The Motor Industry Staff Association says employers who fail to pay over workers’ pension contributions can be held personally liable and forced to pay from their own pockets. The Motor Industry Bargaining Council is stepping up enforcement, including legal action, to recover unpaid contributions. The association’s spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, urged employees to check what they are owed, as billions of rand in benefits remain unclaimed:
# Soccer: Brazil cruised to a dominant 3–0 victory over Haiti at the Philadelphia Stadium in Group C. Matheus Cunha scored twice in the first half and Vinícius Júnior added a third before the break to seal maximum points. Earlier in Group C, Morocco edged Scotland 1–0 in Boston with an early goal from Ismael Saibari. Meanwhile, in Group D, host nation USA secured a 2–0 win over Australia in Seattle to secure their spot in the Round of 32.
# And finally: The Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni accused her one-time close ally US president Donald Trump of fabricating a story about her on Friday, after he told an Italian TV channel she had “begged” him to take a photo with her at a G7 summit. Meloni chided him for acting with far greater deference to the enemies of the West than he does towards old, established allies. The latest exchange marks a sharp deterioration in ties, coming after signs that the two leaders had steadied a previously strained relationship over the war on Iran.
