# Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, says his department is under significant pressure, with just 832 immigration inspectors having to deal with more than 40-thousand cases since January. Addressing the media at an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration yesterday, the minister stated that his department is moving toward technology-driven reforms. Schreiber added that the department has begun using biometric recordings through the Electronic Travel Authorisation system for those who want to enter South Africa:
# Police have arrested television personality and rapper, Molemo ‘Jub Jub’ Maarohanye, in connection with an alleged kidnapping and shooting incident involving an e-hailing driver in Edenvale, Gauteng. He allegedly confronted the driver and accused him of being romantically involved with his girlfriend. Police say the suspect forced the driver into a vehicle and allegedly discharged a firearm in the direction of the driver. Maarohanye is set to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court today on charges of kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and discharging a firearm in public.
# Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile says violence, vandalism, substance-related incidents and learner misconduct remain significant challenges that require continued collaboration between schools, parents, communities and law enforcement agencies. The department commissioned a comprehensive environmental analysis of crime and violence in schools, which identified 245 high-risk schools requiring targeted interventions and support. Maile says the study found that school safety challenges were often linked to broader community conditions:
# Iran’s deputy Foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, says a more expansive agreement with the US will be negotiated during a 60-day ceasefire period, which will include sanctions relief. The US and Tehran have agreed on a peace framework for a deal to bring the war to an end, halt the American blockade of Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Gharibabadi says entry into the 60-day negotiations is conditional on the US implementation of its commitments, especially the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian funds.
# Golf: Zimbabwean Stuart Krog won the Mopani Zambia Open by a single shot at the Nkana Golf Club, his maiden Sunshine Tour title. He closed with a 66 to finish on five under par, one shot clear of South African Jason Roets, who signed for a final round of 75. South Africans Haydn Porteus and Keagan Thomas finished in joint third place on three under par. Krog says this is a special moment in his career:
