Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Firoz Cachalia says violence against foreigners limits foreign investment
# Cosatu says the 0.5-percent growth in GDP is not enough
# And, the US launches self-defence strikes against Iran
# Acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia says illegal immigration is unacceptable and strong measures are required to strengthen border control and to enforce our immigration laws. This is amid anti-foreigner protests that have been taking place across the country in the past few months. Cachalia says violent protest action, targeting foreign nationals, limits foreign investment and undermines the country’s chances to grow the economy and create jobs. He emphasised that only the police and the Border Management Agency are allowed to arrest people for immigration offences:
# Union federation Cosatu says the South African economy growing by 0.5-percent in the first quarter of this year, between January and March, is still far from enough. Finance, agriculture, trade and transport were the largest drivers of this growth on the production side of the economy. Cosatu’s Matthew Parks says the economy needs to be growing faster than it is now to generate a continuous and meaningful fall in the country’s stubbornly high unemployment rate:
# The Gauteng government has welcomed a decline in several major crime categories, including murder, rape and carjacking in the fourth quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year. Contact crimes in the province have gone down by 5.9-percent, while murders and attempted murders are down by 15-percent and 3.2-percent, respectively. Rape decreased by 9.9-percent and sexual violence increased by 5.2-percent. The provincial government spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, says despite the positive trend, efforts to combat crimes that continue to threaten communities will be strengthened:
# The US military has carried out three waves of strikes against Iran in what it said was retaliation for the downing of an Army Apache helicopter. President Donald Trump accused Tehran of shooting down the helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, with two crew members on board, who were safely rescued. US Central Command called the strikes a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression. It adds that it remains vigilant and prepared to defend against unjustified Iranian aggression.
# Soccer: Three Brazilian referees will be in charge of tomorrow’s World Cup opener between South Africa and Mexico in Mexico City. Wilton Sampaio will carry the whistle and will be assisted by Bruno Pires and Bruno Boschilia. Sampaio was also involved in the previous two World Cups in Qatar and Russia. A record pool of 52 referees and 88 assistant referees had been assembled, while specific appointments are normally announced two to three days before matches. Kick-off between Bafana Bafana and Mexico is at 9pm South African time.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-53-cents and the euro at 19-rand-9-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-13-cents, and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-448-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-185-dollars-76-cents a fine ounce, and Brent crude oil is quoted at 91-dollars-22-cents a barrel.
