# Today is World Toilet Day 2023, the focus today is on accelerating change to address the global sanitation crisis, posing a serious threat to human health. Three-point-five-billion people still lack access to safe toilets, with 419-million engaging in open defecation, contributing to the spread of diseases and death of children under five daily. Water Research Commission’s Executive Manager for Water Use and Waste Management, Jay Bhagwan, told Newzroom Africa that water scarcity is a contributing factor.
