# The World Health Organisation has declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern, the highest level of alarm under international health law. This follows the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declaring the viral infection a public health emergency on the continent on Tuesday. More than 14-thousand cases and 524 deaths have been recorded this year. WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says they are on the ground working with the affected countries:
