Western Cape crime stats shows murder rate drops by 9-percent

# The Western Cape recorded an 8.7-percent year-on-year decrease in murders, with one-thousand-and-63 people killed from July to September. Despite the decline, Cape Town remains a hotspot, with 83-percent of the province’s murders occurring in the city. Gang violence and extortion were significant contributors, with firearms used in 55-percent of cases. Police commissioner Thembisile Patekile called the decline an achievement stressing ongoing efforts. MEC Anroux Marais commended law enforcement and asked for intensified crime-fighting measures.
