UN Security Council demands immediate ceasefire in Gaza

# The United Nations Security Council has voted in favour of a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas. Washington had earlier been averse to the word ceasefire in the nearly six-month-old war in Gaza. But amid growing global pressure for a truce in the war, the US abstained from the vote today, to allow the Security Council to demand an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan, which ends in two weeks. It also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
