Sugar Association CEO calls for sugar tax moratorium until 2030 to ensure industry sustainability

# Newly appointed Sugar Association of South Africa CEO, Sifiso Mhlaba is advocating for a sugar tax moratorium until 2030 to ensure the industry’s sustainability. According to News24, the sugar sector, which employs an estimated 65-thousand people, continues to face significant challenges due to the tax. Mhlaba is proposing government alignment with the South African Sugar Value Chain Master Plan which focuses on diversification into biofuels and other products. He says without policy certainty, the sector risks further job losses and reduced industry viability.
