Study shows SA is facing a fast-escalating heroin crisis

# Between 215-thousand and 425-thousand people used heroin daily in South Africa in 2020, marking a significant increase from previous years. A recent study in the Journal of Illicit Economies and Development found that approximately 78-thousand to 155-thousand kilograms of heroin were consumed that year. This growth suggests a ballooning heroin problem, supported by data from drug rehabilitation facilities and wastewater analysis. The crisis is exacerbated by misleading narratives surrounding drugs like “nyaope,” which obscure the severity of South Africa’s heroin crisis.
