Stellenbosch University acquires Africa’s first micro-manufacturing machine

# Stellenbosch University’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has acquired Africa’s first mictro-manufacturing machine. The acquisition of the Durham Magneto Optics MicroWriter ML3 reportedly offers numerous opportunities for research, development and innovation, reducing South Africa’s dependence on other countries for high-tech manufacturing. The machine will be utilised for various microfluidic projects and serve as a national fabrication facility for researchers across the country. Potential manufacturing projects include advanced organ-on-chip medical research, ultra-sensitive optical biosensors, and culture models for cell growth and maintenance.
