Solidarity warns of growing instability in SA’s AGOA position

# Trade union Solidarity warns government’s actions are jeopardising South Africa’s standing in the African Growth and Opportunity Act, a key component of American trade legislation. Despite positive remarks at the recent AGOA forum, reports indicate that United States senator Chris Coons is once again calling for a reconsideration of South Africa’s benefits. The union argues the US Senate is increasingly critical of South Africa’s foreign policy, potentially putting its AGOA participation at risk. Solidarity’s Jaco Kleynhans says South Africa’s vital duty-free exports to the US market, worth 178-billion-rand, are at stake.
