# The South African Human Rights Commission has emphasised government’s insufficient response to child hunger, noting a surge in severe malnutrition cases. Commissioner Jonas Sibanyoni highlighted an incident where a mother took her life and her children’s due to her inability to feed them, saying it further underlines the severity. He also noted a report which shows that within a year, 114 children died in the Eastern Cape due to malnutrition. Sibanyoni says despite school nutrition programmes and grants, the support isn’t commensurate with the constitutional right to adequate food.
