# On World Radio Day, data shows radio audiences in South Africa continue to grow. In an article in The Conversation, associate professor in Media Studies and Production at the University of Cape Town, Tanja Bosch, reveals in 2021, about 80-percent of South Africans had tuned into a radio station within the last week. The country boasts 40 commercial and public broadcast stations and 284 community stations. According to Bosch, the role of community radio remains key in building and consolidating democracy.
