# Former Defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is expected to testify at the Human Rights Commission’s national investigative hearing into the July unrest in Umhlanga, north of Durban today. More than 300 people died during the unrest in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Mapisa-Nqakula had seemingly contradicted president Cyril Ramaphosa when she said the violent unrest was an attempted insurrection. She later clarified her statement, saying there was no sign of a coup or insurrection, but a counter-revolution had taken place.
