In this bulletin:
# The UDM calls for a national review of policing capacity
# The DA says Ramaphosa’s words come too late for the people of North West
# And, Rassie is delighted with the Springboks’ performance in Wellington
# The UDM is calling for an urgent national review of policing capacity as ongoing gang violence continue to affects many communities across the country. The UDM’s Bongani Maqungwana says communities in Cape Town are trapped in the grip of crime, gangsterism, and drug abuse, while the police continues to fail in its constitutional duty to provide safety and security. He says years of under-resourcing, corruption, slow response times, and neglect have left residents vulnerable and frustrated, eroding trust between citizens and law enforcement:
# The DA in North West says president Cyril Ramaphosa’s remarks calling for urgent action to end governance failures in the province come far too late for the thousands who have already suffered under years of ANC misrule. The DA’s Leon Basson says while the President spoke of Special Economic Zones, regulatory reform, and infrastructure, these are not new promises. He says what is new is the public’s growing refusal to accept the ANC’s empty rhetoric:
# The MK Party has condemned minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie’s reckless slashing of funds to the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee. The MK Party’s spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela says what McKenzie has done is sabotage of grassroots development, sabotage of constitutional obligations and sabotage of the dreams of ordinary South Africans. He adds that the MK Party demands an immediate investigation by the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests into McKenzie’s actions.
# President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to NATO allies in a letter on Saturday, saying the US will issue “major” sanctions on Russia only when they agree to do the same and stop buying oil from Russia. Meeting Trump’s demands would mark a major shift among the alliance, and there are major questions as to whether there would be collective interest in taking these steps. The president also called on NATO countries to significantly ramp up tariffs on China in a show of force. Trump added that Russia’s war in Ukraine would end “quickly” if those steps were taken.
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is delighted with his team’s biggest victory ever against the All Blacks in Wellington on Saturday but says they have a tough task against Argentina in their remaining two Rugby Championship matches. The 43-10 victory was the All Blacks’ biggest defeat against the Springboks ever. It also catapulted the Boks back to the top of the world rankings and saw them retain the Freedom Cup for the second year in a row. Erasmus praised the die-hard Springbok supporters and said he was thrilled that the team could make the country proud once again.
# And finally, the Women’s World Cup defending champions New Zealand survived a first-half scare to defeat South Africa 46-17 in their Women’s Rugby World Cup quarterfinal on Saturday. South Africa used their forward power to go to the break level at 10 all, but once the Black Ferns gained more possession, they ran their opponents ragged and scored eight tries in total. Springboks coach Swys de Bruin said he was proud of his team and the difference they have made for millions of girls in South Africa. New Zealand will face Canada in Bristol in Friday’s semifinals.
