# Gauteng premier, Panyaza Lesufi says the provincial government will avail resources to aid local law enforcement in the province to track down the perpetrators of the Soshanguve shooting incident in which four people lost their lives. Lesufi was speaking during a visit to the families of the victims. They were shot and killed in Jukulyn, Soshanguve in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The premier says there are 331 active cases for various offences in Soshanguve:
# The South African National Defence Force has distanced itself from comments made by former naval commander Sylvester Mangolele on social media. Mangolele called for the removal of president Cyril Ramaphosa from office within 48 hours. The SANDF in a statement said Mangolele was dismissed from the Defence Force in 2018 and does not speak on behalf of the SANDF. The statement further says it condemns Mangolele’s utterances with the contempt it deserves. The SANDF’s spokesperson, Siphiwe Dlamini, says his comments are not reflective of, nor represent the SANDF in any way, shape or form.
# Hamas says one of its top officials, Saleh al Arouri, has been killed in an explosion in Beirut. It blames the assassination on Israel. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said the blast in Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh killed four people and was carried out by an Israeli drone. Al Arouri played a key role in Hamas and had been working to develop closer ties between the organisation and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon. The 57-year-old was one of the founders of Hamas’s military wing, and also led Hamas’s operations in the West Bank.
# Soccer: Kylian Mbappe and his possible move to Real Madrid is expected to be the key theme of the transfer window that opens in Europe on Monday. Much attention will focus on Mbappe, who a year ago scored a hat-trick for France in the World Cup final only to finish on the losing side. Real Madrid are again the main suitor for the 25-year-old. It’s far from certain though, as the French are passionate about Mbappe. President Emmanuel Macron in June 2022 persuade him to stay at Paris Saint-Germain when a move to Real seemed certain.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-58-cents and the euro at 20-rand-36-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-48-cents and Bitcoin trades at 45-thousand-176-dollars-34-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-and-63-dollars-58-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-81-cents a barrel.
# And finally: A research study led by the University of Maine, suggests that human evolution may hinder efforts to address climate change. The study explores how global environmental limits could impact future outcomes of human evolution. The research highlights that humans are facing constraints on space. Moreover, the industrial use of fossil fuels is identified as a key factor creating hazardous global environmental problems, posing threats to safety and future resource access.
