Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Former Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng says president Ramaphosa should have declared who funded his CR17 campaign
# The Freedom Front Plus demands transparency in the face of Eskom’s load-shedding challenges
# And, 16 more hostages are released as the truce deadline between Israel and Hamas looms
# Former Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng says president Cyril Ramaphosa had a duty to disclose who funded the CR17 campaign. He delivered the SAFM inaugural lecture yesterday evening, under the theme Constitutionalism and Upholding the Rule of Law in South Africa. Mogoeng says Ramaphosa acted inconsistent with the Constitution when he sealed the CR17 bank statements and fought former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane legally for exposing the truth:
# The Freedom Front Plus has raised concerns over Eskom’s transparency amid the ongoing unpredictability of load-shedding. The party accuses the power utility of insufficient fuel reserves for diesel power stations and questions whether the utility is truly oblivious or being deceptive. The FF Plus’s Wynand Boshoff says despite promises to reduce load-shedding, Eskom reinstated stage six, citing unforeseen breakdowns. He says the economic and societal impact, coupled with water supply challenges in certain municipalities, prompts independence from Eskom for those financially able.
# The DA in Gauteng claims that the provincial Department of Health refuses to pay City Power, despite the electricity supply to several Johannesburg hospitals being set to be cut off today due to non-payment. The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital alone owes about 41-million-rand. The DA’s, Jack Bloom, says this is a matter of life and death and the department needs to act urgently:
# Sixteen more hostages comprising ten Israelis, four Thai nationals, and two Israeli-Russians have been released by Hamas in Gaza on the sixth day of the temporary humanitarian truce, which ends later this morning. In return 30 Palestinians have also been freed from Israeli jails. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Tel Aviv to discuss extending the temporary truce and increasing humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip. Key mediator Qatar says it is very optimistic of an extension.
# Rugby: The Stormers are desperately looking to get back to winning ways in the United Rugby Championship after a winless European tour. They are in 12th place on the log, with only the top eight qualifying for the Champions Cup. The Stormers will host Zebre in Stellenbosch on Saturday. Several Springboks are available – Manie Libbok, Damian Willemse, Frans Malherbe, and Deon Fourie. Coach John Dobson says they will be eased back into action:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-71-cents and the euro at 20-rand-54-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-77-cents and Bitcoin trades at 37-thousand-876-dollars-78-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-45-dollars-21-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-60-cents a barrel.
