# An education activist says Basic Education is on the right track with the BELA Bill
# Russia confirms killing South African mercenaries in Ukraine
# And, rugby: The Six Nations title will be decided in today’s final round
# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta says monitoring and evaluation are key when it comes to public participation programmes on the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill. He adds the Department of Basic Education is on the right track with the Bill and should be applauded for prioritising learning and teaching. Makaneta says the Bill will restore order in the teaching fraternity as it provides for consequences for teachers who administer corporal punishment:
# The Johannesburg High Court has sentenced a 30-year-old e-hailing driver to two life terms, plus 60 years, for rape and kidnapping. Bolt driver Emmanuel Mudau targeted women who requested rides from Cosmo City early in 2022. The National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, says the four victims testified after Mudau picked them up, he took them to secluded areas where he raped them:
# Russia says its invasion of Ukraine has claimed the lives of 14 South African mercenaries, out of 35 fighting on the side of Kyiv. News 24 quotes the Russian Ministry of Defence saying South Africa is the third-largest contributor of African mercenaries in the conflict, after Nigeria, who has lost 47 out of 97, and Algeria, with 28 fatalities out of 60 mercenaries. The ministry says it knows of 13-thousand-387 foreign mercenaries, of whom almost six-thousand have died.
# Rugby: The Six Nations title will be decided in today’s final round. Wales welcomes Italy to Cardiff first, before Ireland and Scotland do battle in Dublin, and France and England play in Lyon. Ireland has a four-point lead on top of the log, followed by England, and Scotland and France one point further back. This means all of them have at least a realistic chance to win the series. Italy and Wales are fighting it out for fifth place and to avoid the wooden spoon.
# And, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi will today launch the one million men’s petitions campaign against gender-based violence in White City, Soweto. Joined by Social Development MEC Mbali Hlophe and Justice and Correctional Services Deputy minister Phathekile Holomisa, the campaign aims to collect one million signatures opposing gender-based violence and kidnappings. The campaign mobilises men to volunteer their skills and services to fight social ills and empower men and boys against gender-based violence. The launch includes collaboration with Men in Prayer, the sporting and entertainment fraternity, and civil society organisations.
