# Cosatu says it is disappointed government missed the opportunity to introduce new blood and people with a diversity of economic views at the South African Reserve Bank. Mampho Modise was this week appointed as a new deputy governor, while Lesetja Kganyago was retained as governor. Cosatu’s acting spokesperson, Matthew Parks, says the appointed people come from Treasury’s conservative orthodox school of economic thought:
# Eskom has announced load-shedding will be suspended from five this morning until four in the afternoon, after which stage one will be in place until five tomorrow morning. The weekend’s load-shedding pattern will be repeated tomorrow due to lower anticipated demand. The utility plans to return three 100 megawatts of generating capacity by Monday. Further updates for the week ahead will be provided tomorrow afternoon.
# The Eastern Cape Community Safety Department MEC Xolile Nqatha has announced intensified crime operations in Gqeberha’s gang-ridden northern areas. The move follows a Crime Summit hosted by the department, aiming to combat gang violence and drug abuse. Nqatha says with a focus on crime intelligence, the operations target areas notorious for criminal activity, bolstering efforts to enhance community safety:
# Golf: Nineteen-year-old Gabrielle Venter has claimed her first major title as a professional player by winning the Ladies Open at the Royal Cape Golf Club. Venter carded a final round of four-under-par 70 in the Mother City, to finish on nine-under-par for a one-stroke victory. Scotland’s Kylie Henry recorded bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes to blow her one-stroke lead. Henry finished in a tie for second with Emie Peronnin of France.
# And, president Cyril Ramaphosa will today commemorate the 110th anniversary of King Dinuzulu ka Cetshwayo in KwaZulu-Natal. Beginning with a wreath-laying ceremony at the King Dinuzulu memorial in Emakhosini, the event honours the king’s defiance against colonial rule. Collaborating with the Zulu royal family, academics, and cultural groups, various activities including conferences and music festivals highlight King Dinuzulu’s role in shaping South Africa’s journey to democracy. The event culminates at the KwaCeza sports field, symbolising the king’s historic victory over colonial forces.
