# Motorsport: There was drama on the first day of the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The first session was called off after just nine minutes, when Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari hit a loose manhole cover, badly damaging his car. The second session started two and a half hours later, with Ferrari setting the pace. Charles Leclerc was half a second quicker than Sainz with Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso third fastest. To add insult to injury, Sainz has also received a 10-place grid penalty, because the new battery needed to replace the one damaged in his crash was outside his permitted allocation.
