Lesotho Highlands Water Project begins six-month dewatering for maintenance

# The Lesotho Highlands Water Project tunnel supplying over 700 billion litres of water to South Africa has begun its dewatering process. The six-month maintenance project will include reapplying corrosion protection, which was estimated in 2019 to last five more years. Spokesperson Mpho Brown has highlighted the project’s importance for both countries. He says it will pave way for the provision of water to South Africa and hydroelectricity to Lesotho while generating revenue through water royalties. Reserves have been pumped to South Africa to cover the shutdown period.
