# It is not economically viable to keep unskilled farmworkers in the value chain due to the demand for specific skills and the double-digit wage increase implemented earlier this year. This is the opinion of Agri SA’s labour and employment law specialist, Lebogang Sethusha. She cautioned further increases in the wages of farmworkers next year could claim even more jobs as well as present a barrier to new entrants. Sethusha says the sector employed about 792-thousand workers in the first quarter of this year. In the fourth quarter last year the figure was 810-thousand.
