# The KZN Department of Public Works has identified 13-thousand government buildings requiring refurbishment to stop illegal occupation and criminal activity. Spokesperson Steve Bhengu told Newzroom Afrika that audits are underway to fast-track the process. He also highlighted the department’s intentions to reduce the 1.2-billion-rand spent on rates and leases for some used and unused buildings:
